Gong for KX chief
THE man behind Europe’s biggest development – the £2-billion Kings Cross redevelopment – has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
Roger Madelin, chief executive of developers Argent Limited, received the honour on Monday for “services to sustainable development”.
The 47-year-old boss, who cycles from his home in Chiswick to the company’s offices in King’s Cross every day, said he was shocked but delighted when first told the news last November.
He said: “My wife said they probably won’t give it to you because you keep telling government ministers what you think. But I said I am not going to stop doing that.”
He added: “Everyone has been very kind and generous about it which has been nice – although I am expecting a lot of teasing also.”
Argent were given the go-ahead for the King’s Cross redevelopment by Town Hall planning chiefs in November, seven years after first starting the project.
Mr Madelin said: “We feel very privileged to have finally got planning permission after seven years and a lot of work on it. “We are up for the challenge. We will be generating our own electricity, providing our own heat networks – these are all new environmental technologies and we are all excited about it.”
He added: “We have always tried to push the boat out on environmental sustainability and the way we manage our projects and involve local businesses and training. It’s about delivering the whole package.”
