‘Thierry’s boost will lead to Champions League glory’
Wenger says the best is yet to come from ‘captain fantastic’
ARSENE Wenger believes the return of captain fantastic Thierry Henry from injury can boost his young guns toward Champions League glory in May.
The French goal ace was greeted with muted applause at Ashburton Grove on Tuesday in his first game for a month.
Arsenal have enjoyed a good run of form since Henry, the club’s greatest ever goal scorer, injured his neck on December 1.
After losing two games on the bounce against Fulham and Bolton, Wenger’s young guns hit back with a seven-game unbeaten run that ended against Sheffield United on Saturday.
Some fans had called for Wenger to sell Henry in the January transfer window as he looks to usher in his next era if world beaters.
But after watching his side cruise past Charlton on Tuesday Wenger sent out a message to disillusioned fans who believe the team is better without the 29-year-old goal machine, saying: “His best is yet to come.
“He is back, he is hungry and I am convinced you will see a great Thierry Henry from now until the end of May.
“It is a massive individual and psychological boost for the team to know he is back.”
Wenger conceded the striker had been at the end of his tether.
He said: “He’s in a good frame of mind now because he has been at the end of his physical and mental potential.”
And Wenger believes his rejuvenated captain could lead his young guns to an unprecedented cup treble.
He added: “We have a lot to go for. We go in the Champions League, we have the FA Cup on Saturday at Liverpool, and we are in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup too.” |
