Faisal’s death: Can you help?
Baffled cops put out plea for witnesses in case of man found dead in river
DETECTIVES are trying to piece together the final movements of Faisal Osman, the Camden Town hotel worker who was found dead in a river just days before Christmas.
They have released a picture of a distinctive yellow zip-up top with a sketched design worn by Mr Osman on the day he was last seen in the hope that it will trigger people’s memories.
But baffled officers have so far got no further in establishing what happened to the 24 year-old after he left a rowdy house party in Rowse Close in Stratford – not far from the river waters where his body was found. Friends said it was at the party that Mr Osman became embroiled in an argument, possibly over a girl.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: “Investigating officers are now looking to trace anyone who may have attended the party in Rowse Close and who have not yet been spoken to by police to contact them. They are also keen to speak to anyone who may be able to assist and build a picture of Mr Osman’s last movements.”
She added: “In particular they are keen to trace anyone who may have seen a man matching Mr Osman’s description, wearing a yellow hooded top to call them.”
Mr Osman, who lived with his family in Gilbey’s Yard, Camden Town, was reported missing on December 10. His body was found in the Waterworks River – a tributary of the winding River Lea in near Warton Road in Newham ten days later.
It was the second tragedy to strike the Osman family in less than a year, following the fatal stabbing of Mr Osman’s brother Mahir, 18, in Camden High Street last January.
When a New Journal reporter visited the area on Friday, nobody in the houses and businesses close to the river could recall anything unusual on the night of the party.
So far no appeal boards have been posted but police insist that they are spreading their appeal as far as possible.
A police spokeswoman said: “The appeal went out again last week. It went to everyone but it was aimed particularly at the ethnic press to see if that could bring in information.
“There wouldn’t be appeal boards at the scene because it would be difficult to decide where the scene actually is. The reports of where his body was first sighted were different from where it was eventually taken out of the river.”
Detectives are still waiting for results of a second post-mortem after initial tests at East Ham mortuary on December 22 left a series of questions surrounding Mr Osman’s death unanswered.
They include how long the body was in the river before it was found and whether Mr Osman was breathing or not when he entered the water. Officers are still waiting for the findings and the death is currently classed as ‘unexplained’.
A spokeswoman said: “We can’t assume what happened. Some of his friends said he was in Hackney, others said he had gone elsewhere. He had been reported missing for a few days. It will be for the coroner to decide ultimately what the cause of death was.
“When we get the results of the tests, they do take some time to do, we will be able to see what kind of investigation is needed.”
