Get well soon, Roy
• COUNCILLOR Roy Shaw’s indisposition is unwelcome and sad news. (Longest-serving politician unwell, January 11)
Despite disenchantment with Labour in Camden, Roy Shaw has remained much appreciated locally. He is known and respected as that rare breed, a trusted politician and a faithful servant of local people.
He has been the only Haverstock ward councillor to bother to analyse and grasp the details of the dubious planning application for the seven-storey scheme at Talacre and the recent application for the closure of Dalby Street. He did not do this for any political gain, but for practical reasons.
Having once been chairman of the planning committee, he is well placed to understand planning law. He warned his colleagues of the executive at the time about the flaws of the scheme, but his advice was ignored. Had they listened to him, the turmoil and disbelief that surrounds this scheme would have been avoided.
He also fought behind the scene for the survival of the Kentish Town Swimming Baths. In that instance, they listened but not quickly enough to save their own skins at the local election. Nonetheless, Cllr Shaw has our gratitude for at least trying. We hope he will recover soon.
