Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:18 January 2007

Wrong Britannia

RECENTLY I was at the Royal Festival Hall for classical spectacular show performance, which was absolutely superb.
Apart from, that is, when they performed a song called Rule Britannia, Britannia Rules the Waves – Briton Never Never Will Be Slaves.
Who invented/created the words of this song and why and what exactly do they mean?
I think (correct me if I am wrong) that Britain took part in the slave trade, which is absolutely appalling behaviour to administer to another human being.
I realise that it is history, but of course that does not make it right. I found it difficult to accept that people were singing along to this song and waving their Union Jack flags to it.
Should it be allowed? Could it be banned? Is it so called “politically correct”?
