Greens: 4x4 parking fines ‘not enough’
EXTRA parking permit charges for drivers of big vehicles such as gas-guzzling 4x4 cars do not go far enough, the Green Party has warned.
Highgate ward councillor Maya de Souza said her party welcomed council plans to introduce higher charges for cars with bigger engines – vehicles that cause the most carbon emissions.
Under the proposals – revealed first in last week’s New Journal – Camden is set to become only the second council in London to introduce a polluter-pays policy, charging up to 60 per cent more for parking permits to drivers of larger cars.
But Cllr de Souza said: “We welcome the policy in principle but we do not think that a 60 per cent increase will change behaviour. That’s what this policy should be about, changing people’s behaviour. We don’t think 60 per cent is enough to affect people’s vehicle choice.”
