Burst water main traders demand payout
TRADERS in Hampstead hit by plunging profits after a burst water main in Heath Street say they will be seeking compensation from Thames Water for the damage to their business.
Dozens of shops have been hit by the incident which caused part of the road to cave in on itself, swallowing up a lamp post on the street.
Yesterday (Wednesday), more than three weeks after the incident, Heath Street was still closed off to traffic – leading to more disruption for fuming traders who accused Thames Water of keeping them in the dark.
Adriana Lopes, who runs fashion boutique Du Arte on Heath Street, says: “I am talking to my solicitor about seeking compensation from Thames Water. This is something that could have been prevented.
“It has been horrible. We have been without water, without light from the lamp post. The electricity has been coming and going. We rely on passing trade to sustain our business.” A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: “We are sorry the traders do not feel that they were kept informed. We are treating all the issues raised very seriously. We realise the disruption and inconvenience the streetworks have caused and we will consider their claims for compensation on a case by case business.” |
