‘Help us out’ appeal to critics
BELEAGUERED managers at the old Hampstead Town Hall are searching for new trustees “with a strong local connection” to help steer them out of trouble.
Interchange Trust, the charity which runs the building in Haverstock Hill, Belsize Park, wants to open up discussions on how the former Town Hall is managed.
More than 30 local associations and residents’ bodies have been invited to join a forum group, which will meet for the first time on February 10.
Amid public concern about the running of the building, Interchange acting chief executive Sue Wilby said she was recommending the charity recruit four trustees to help out.
In November the Friends of Hampstead Town Hall, who claimed groups were being overcharged, called for managers to be sacked and the building reclaimed for public use.
Ms Wilby, a former director of customer services at Camden Council, said: “We need to make this community forum a success. “I don’t doubt that it will be a bumpy ride but we have to demonstrate good faith and keep at it.”
The 15 charities based in the building, including the Weekend Arts College and the University of the Third Age, are being asked to join the forum.
A separate internal forum will address specific concerns.
The proposals have been welcomed by the Friends, who are due to discuss the building tonight (Thursday). Chairwoman Helen Marcus said: “This is what we have been asking for since the building opened.”
Dr Alan Tomkiins, chief executive of Interchange, is currently recuperating from surgery
