Harriers’ healthy lead
HIGHGATE Harriers women’s team will go into their final Metropolitan Cross-Country League meet with a healthy lead at the top of the table following another impressive performance on Saturday.
A series of commanding displays throughout the season has seen Highgate open up a 400-point lead over their nearest rivals.
And the highflying Harriers were at it again on Saturday as they scored valuable points in their race at Wormwood Scrubs.
Esther Evans again ran well to seal second place as she came home in a time of 16 minutes, 35seconds. Club mate Astrid Wingler was the second highest-placed veteran to cross the finishing line, recorded a time of 16mins, 45secs to clinch fourth spot.
Out of a field of 117 runners, Kate Jenrick also showed great pace and determination to take 17th place.
The Harriers women’s team are also having a good run in the Middlesex Cross-Country League.
In their last outing at Horsenden Hill, Svenja Abel and Evans ran brilliantly to finish first and second respectively in the 8,000m. Wingler and Alex Goodwin, Anne Curley, Natasha Cendrowicz and Louise Burnie also all scored well for Highgate.
Meanwhile the Harriers men’s team continued their improving form in the Metropolitan Cross Country League on Saturday.
Club captain Henry Dodwell showed incredible strength as he finished third out of a field of 287 runners with a time of 28mins, 59secs.
Ryan McKinlay, Atak Ding and Peter Downie also all ran well, leaving Highgate in fourth place overall out of the 25 clubs taking part.
The result continues an impressive run of form for the Highgate men’s team, which saw them win the Middlesex Cross-Country Championships that were held in Perivale the previous Saturday.
The Harriers were well placed for team victory with Dodwell taking sixth place, while David Bruce and Chris Beecham finished eighth and 14th respectively.
