Scandal of £600k fraud must never happen again
• I'D like to thank you for your coverage of the trial of John Baptiste (£600k Town Hall Fraud, Jan 18).
He was supposed to be looking after the financial interests of vulnerable people in Camden and it is deplorable that this occurred.
He was a trusted member of council staff who abused his position and as such I would urge the judge to reflect this with the tough sentence he deserves.
As the new executive member for adult social care in Camden, I’d like to reassure residents that we do all we can to stamp out fraud and will thoroughly investigate any allegations of fraud or irregularity.
CLLR MARTIN DAVIES
Conservative executive member for adult social care and health
• ANOTHER scandal from a Camden Council department and it won’t be the last.
This time money was taken from the frail and elderly. When asked how John Baptiste got away with fraud for six years, the excuse from the council was you have to trust senior officers.
I’m sorry but any one who handles money for customers in their charge should have their books checked.
MRS D RODGIE
Bayham Street, NW1
• JOHN Baptiste’s guilty plea goes some way to restoring my faith in the system, nothing can make up for the years of financial hardship and loss of dignity which so many of us have suffered.
