Opening hours
• I HAVE read with interest the comments on community shops being forced out of business and replaced by café chains.
I am not surprised this is happening. I am a professional finishing my workday well after 6pm and I often find that the only shops open when I need them are the supermarkets and chains.
When I look at the opening hours of these community shops – 9am-5pm weekdays and rarely on Saturdays, I cannot help wondering who the targeted customers are. Elderly? Housewives? Teleworkers? These people hardly make a decent proportion of the central London population.
Therefore blaming rents is ridiculous as I suspect these shops simply do not make enough sales. They should try to be open when their customers actually need them.
