Delighted that health and wellbeing is being given official recognition
• WE are delighted to say that the health and wellbeing of residents has been acknowledged by Camden Council’s Executive.
At the Executive meeting on 15 January, during the discussion on the Review of funding to the voluntary and community sector, it was decided to broaden the health category to embrace health and wellbeing beyond physical activities.
As well as this welcome decision, funding for health has been doubled as part of the Review.
This offers great opportunities to voluntary and community organisations like Women+Health to provide a wider range of services to address the health inequalities that affect Camden’s citizens.
We would like to acknowledge the role of members of the council’s Health Scrutiny Committee in supporting the final decision on health funding to the voluntary sector.
CASS WEDD
Chair, Women+Health

• AS Chair of Camden’s Health Scrutiny Committee I share Cass Wedd’s concern that Camden Council should take seriously its responsibility to promote the health and well-being of residents (Letters January 18).
But I have to point out that the council has never proposed “cutting funding for health”. In fact, under the proposals agreed by the Executive last week, funding for the health category will more than double next year.
I agree with Cass that it would not have been right to insist that bids for this substantially increased level of funding should be restricted solely to physical activity. That is why I argued successfully that the category should be broadened to encompass “physical activity and well being”. Cass has thanked me personally for my efforts in achieving this important change.
Taken as a whole, the new funding package is good news for voluntary sector organisations like Women + Health that are seeking to promote health and well-being in Camden.
