Tags to save Heath trees
HAMPSTEAD Heath’s oldest trees are to be “tagged” to ensure their survival.
The pioneering project, organised by conservation group Heath Hands on the request of the City of London, will see 784 trees around the Heath tagged with tiny metal discs by volunteers.
Each disc contains a number which matches a database of all the trees set up following a tree survey carried out by Heath Hands a year ago.
Jeremy Wright from Heath Hands said: “If staff are concerned about a particular old tree, they can put the number into the database and find full information on that tree.”
Many of the trees to be protected under the scheme are more than 250 years old with a handful possibly dating back 500 years. The majority are English Oak trees.
