Steamed up about station dome
A HALF-DOME of aluminium and glass… this is the first glimpse of how King’s Cross station could look.
Network Rail has circulated artists’ impressions as it gathers views on how the station could be revamped. Plans to clear the station forecourt to create an open square have been generally welcomed but the dome’s roof is a point of controversy.
King’s Cross Conservation Area Advisory Committee has already come up with alternative sketches of how the station could be developed and has asked for the canopy roof to be “lifted”. Architect Anthony Delarue, a member of the group, said: “We are very happy to see the western front restored as the main entrance to the station and the southern front returned to the simplicity of its two dramatic arches on Euston Road. It is accepted that time is of the essence in putting this scheme in hand, and none of our suggestions will have a negative impact on timing or the sub-surface work already in hand.”
He added: “The proposed domed canopy to the western concourse effectively obscures the façade of the station, chopping it in half horizontally – above and below the roof.”
