Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 February 2007

Dalby Street road closure will cause traffic chaos

• THE claim (Dalby Street debate fires up again, Jan 25.) that another public consultation over changes to the road layout at Prince of Wales is imminent raises some serious questions.

How have our council planners and engineers managed until now to assess the traffic situation without publishing basic information?
Has anyone measured existing traffic volumes on Dalby Street and Prince of Wales Road before reaching their conclusion, so far?
Will they assist the public debate by publishing their findings?
Is the forthcoming public consultation a mere formality or a genuine attempt to promote good planning?  If it is the latter, the least the public should be given are a few hard facts by the Town Hall.

CAN I be alone in supporting the narrowing of Prince of Wales Road?

It is to be welcome as it will reduce road traffic on Prince of Wales Road to a trickle moving at walking speed.
This anticipated reduced traffic volume will improve air quality and the slowness of traffic will bring the safety bonus.

HAVING read about the public consultation regarding the changes proposed by the Dalby Street developer for Prince of Wales Road I was looking forward to making my comments
.
I drive my children and some of our neighbours’ to the Talacre Sports Centre on a regular basis. I happen to know what it is like to have to negotiate the busy Prince of Wales Road and Dalby Street Junctions at various times of the day. With 200,000 visitors per year to the Sports Centre, a substantial part of those visitors are likely to come in by car.
The proposed changes will affect more than a few residents. Why aren’t sports centre users also included in this consultation?
After all, it is they who will be inconvenienced by slower traffic and pile up as they reach the busy junction.
CAROL O’BRIEN
Hillway, N6

YOUR recent revelations on how Town Hall officials and some former councillors have been ‘running the show’ in past years outraged me.
It has shown how highly placed executives have undermined local democracy.
Residents, meanwhile, are meant to pick up the pieces for the mistakes they make. One such terrible mistake was the granting of planning permission for the seven-storey building scheme at Dalby Street.
This has lead to the now proposed narrowing of Prince of Wales Road. That is a disaster waiting to happen.
A narrowing of this exclusively used road is likely to affect traffic negatively, cause long queues and endanger cyclists. It will limit scope for dropping off and collecting rail passengers at Kentish Town West station.
I am fed up with this Town Hall farce. Granting the road closure at Dalby Street without public inquiry would be a huge mistake.
