Police hunt thieves who took sculptures made from 200-year-old cedar tree

Police are hunting a giant fish and two horses stolen from a park in Holly Lodge on Tuesday night.

THE sculptures were crafted from a recently felled 200-year old cedar by artist Friedel Bueckling.
The tree, in the park at the top of the Highgate estate, was cut down in January after tree surgeons said it was in danger of collapsing.
The sculptor has been working with a chainsaw on the massive, six-foot thick trunk.
Standing around 250 feet high, it was a much-loved Highgate landmark and residents asked Mr Bueckling, whose works are on permanent display on the South Bank and in Trent Park, to come and use the sweet-scented cedar wood to make a series of sculptures a for young children to play on.
But thieves struck in the middle of the night, taking away three of the largest and most impressive works.
He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I came back in the morning to see them gone. They are very big – you would need at least two people to move them, and a car.”
The sculptures sell for up to £600 each – but Mr Bueckling is more angry that they are designed to be used by children.
He added: “If the thieves have taken them for themselves, how can they live with that? If it is for their little boy or girl, will they be comfortable sitting on something that has been stolen? And if it is for sale, they’ll only get a few pounds for it – it is a real shame.”

If you have information about the missing pieces, please call Mr Bueckling on
