Crown and Goose under threat again
A POPULAR Camden Town pub is facing a fight for survival against the bulldozers – for the third time.
The Crown and Goose on the corner of Delancey Street and Arlington Road will be demolished if developers can convince planning chiefs to back them.
Also under threat once more is the neighbouring New Camden Snooker Club.
Estate agents DE & J Levy have seen two attempts to develop the site collapse in the last three years. Camden councillors threw out their plans and then planning inspector rejected their appeal.
On each occasion, residents and fans of the pub have raised a protest against the corner site being redeveloped. The pub’s supporters include comics Phil Jupitus and Julian Clary, while the snooker hall was backed by trickshot ace John Virgo.
The latest plans, submitted just before Christmas, are to bring in the wrecking ball and start from scratch on the site. Developers want to build a new block of flats with a ground floor gastro-pub style bar.
Labour ward councillor Pat Callaghan said she would help mount a campaign to try and fend off the developers again.
She said: “They seem to leave it for a year and then come back again. I am definitely against it and we will be protesting again.”
Protester Tess Read, who lives in Delancey Street, said: “ They have changed bits of the plans but they still want to demolish the pub and change that corner. Every time this happens we have to make a protest.”
Consultants for the developers – the Ivy Barclay Trust – said that the buildings did not warrant saving from demolition.
DE & J Levy have always maintained that they will develop the site sensitively.
A spokesman said: “It is one of the most under utilised site in the area and the family who own the land want to develop it as sympathetically as they can.”
