salutes award-winners
NEWSCASTER Jon Snow returned to the New Horizons Youth Centre,
where he once worked, to hand over awards on Tuesday.
The Channel 4 news presenter worked at the youth centre in Chalton
Street, Somers Town, for three years before becoming a journalist.
He presented certificates to teenagers who have passed London
Open College Network-accredited weekend courses run at the centre.
Subjects studied include drugs and alcohol, prejudice and discrimination,
budget management, preparation for work, and assertiveness.
Janet Matthews, who has given up her weekends to help tutor
the teenagers, said the courses, funded by the Learning and
Skills Council and the European Social Fund, covered subjects
not taught at school.
She said: “They give you important life skills. We try
to make it fun and be creative with the lessons.”
Quadruple award-winner Sewit Tadesse, 19, who is about to fly
to Namibia to help build a school, was one of 10 teenagers collecting
awards.
Mr Snow, who is the chairman of the centre, said: “For
many it’s the first time they have received an award in
their lives. Let’s celebrate those who didn’t get
an award as the stars of the future.”
