Camden New Journal - Sport - BIG MATCH SPECIAL by CATHERINE ETOE

Our weekly spotlight on one of the league's big games

Camden and Islington Youth League
Hawks 1, St Pancras 2

TOP of the table clashes don’t come much better than this under-9s contest, chosen as the third in our Camden New Journal and Islington Tribune Big Match Specials.
Islington’s Hawks had the chance to close the gap on league leaders St Pancras on a freezing Friday night at Market Road.
But Saints skipper Alfie Snapper Young had other ideas and put on a man of the match display to secure his side victory and receive the Big Match Special trophy from the leader of Camden Council, Raj Chada.
A frenetic first few minutes saw the lively Taofiq Olomowewe in with a chance of opening the scores, but keeper Harry O’Hara dived bravely to deny the Saint. O’Hara was unable to deny Young moments later though as the defender whipped home a brilliant free kick for 1-0.
Saints substitute Randell Williams posed a serious threat with his darting runs on the left wing.
But man of the match contender Elijah Brown combined well with Alfie Powell to keep the winger quiet. Brown almost equalised when Billy Underwood squared a ball across the face of goal, but he skied his shot over Gustavo Orozco.
He made amends a minute later, this time setting up Underwood to equalise just before half time. Saints came back strongly at the restart but skipper Ben Tyler and Andrew White defended stoutly, with Young clearing up every danger in the opposing defence.
Underwood just missed out on a second with a whipped shot from the wing, but it was Young who hit the brace with another exquisitely taken free kick to keep his side top of the table.
Saints: Orozco, Young, Alloway, Smith, Moir, Bungisa, Newell, Williams, Olomowewe, Wanzola.
Hawks: O’Hara, White, Underwood, Hinds-Green, Brown, Tyler, Powell, Summers, Blackman, Ross, Crean-White.

Man of the Match: Alfie Young

Both sides were bursting with talent but Saints skipper Alfie Young (pictured with Camden Council leader Raj Chada) won it after denying Hawks’ again and again with a towering defensive display and scoring from two superb free kicks.
