Coalition split over how hard to clobber 4x4s
MOVES to hit drivers of high-polluting cars have unexpectedly caused the first major split in the new Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition at the Town Hall.
While the Tories are happy to operate a sliding-scale fee system whereby drivers of gas-guzzling 4x4 cars would be hit by a 60 per cent increase in the cost of parking permits, Lib Dems are now considering hiking the charge even further.
One partnership source said senior Lib Dems were “wobbling” after a revolt of their backbenchers who want stronger action on the drivers who cause the most carbon emissions.
At first glance, the policy appeared to have cross-party support but rebel Lib Dems joined forces with Green and Labour members at a ‘call-in’ on Tuesday night – a special council session where Town Hall policy is scrutinised. The plans were bounced back for further discussion.
Lib Dem councillor Ralph Scott said: “The extra cost is a couple of copies of The Sun and a pint of milk. It’s not an enormous difference. People who can afford a 20 grand car are not going to worry about a difference of this size.”
Green councillor Maya De Souza said: “It is a fairly small amount. It could actually be detrimental in making drivers think their pollution has been ‘legitimised’.”
But Tory members, including the council’s environment chief, insist the suggested rise goes far enough. Councillor Rebecca Hossack said: “Under these plans, if you cause twice the emissions, you are going to pay twice as much. It is wrong to try and change people’s behaviour. We shouldn’t be too punitive. People are already taxed to the limit.”
