Officials go globe trotting
THE Town Hall spent more than £4,000 sending its staff around the world on special assignments last year.
But receipts show that no elected councillor has been on a foreign trip since the New Journal revealed how former environment chief John Thane had enjoyed a string of European adventures in September 2005.
The former councillor had used council funds to travel to conferences in Malta, Denmark and Austria, trips described as ‘junkets’ by political rivals.
Latest details – unlocked by reporters using the Freedom of Information Act – show that it is unelected council officials that are more likely to hop on a plane.
The most travelled member of staff is Dagmara Kodlubanski, who travelled to Turin, Brussels, Barcelona and New York for technology conferences in the last year.
Camden’s officials have also flown to China and Australia, although some of the trips were paid for using outside sponsorship
