Not a good week for hapless England rejects
WE like to see ourselves as a good campaigning newspaper, taking up the crunch issues that matter to you the reader.
You quite rightfully demand the best from us and we do our best to deliver each week. Far from me to crow but this time your soaraway favourite weekly read has surpassed itself, leaving rivals snoozing once more.
This column’s worthy campaign, supported across the borough and beyond, to see Paul Robinson dropped from the England team has finally come up trumps.
The bungling goalkeeper was left in the stands last night. I have been raising this issue all season.
It was clear from the start when he couldn’t handle Ivan Campo’s 70-yard daisy cutter travelling at snail speed that he needed to be removed.
Since then, he has made mistakes against Manchester United, Arsenal and of course for England when his high-kicking blooper against Croatia brought shame on the nation. Is it by chance that he also plays for Tottenham?
Its all very well Spurs fans bringing England flags to the new home of football, as they did last week when they came to Ashburton Grove to see their team fold to Arsenal’s reserves in the cup.
But who would you rather have in goal? A hapless England reject or an angry German with a championship medal?
YOU could say it’s been bad week for Spurs. The transfer window slammed shut and Pauline Stalteri was still on the books.
Thierry Swayze twanged some more knicker elastic as the Euro Losers got a lucky point against the Euro Failures at the Riverside.
We played Man Utd and referee Mark ‘Mr Magoo’ Clatterbug left his bi-focals at home. Again.
And Steve McClaren dropped England’s No1 for a bloke who keeps goal for the most hapless team in the Premiership.
If I’d known things would get this bad I’d have enjoyed last season a bit more.
But us Spurs fans can always see a silver lining. So here goes.
At least we didn’t shell out for Matty Upson.
We can carry on chuckling as straw-clutching Arsenal players utter the words ‘mathematically possible’ for at least another couple of weeks.
Spurs have done their bit in the nobbling of Chelski and the Special One this season.
Oh yes, and we could watch England versus Spain at the Theatre of Cheating Keepers without worrying about Robbo stumbling over a div.
But enough of Cesc Fabulous. Here’s to Paul staying out of the England team. Worked for David James. Maybe it could work for us.
