Anna and Jo star with double gold
TRIUMPHANT duo Jo King and Anna Critchlow led London Heathside to double gold glory on Saturday in the combined Middlesex and South of England Veterans Cross-Country Championships in Ruislip.
Competing in the women’s 35 to 39-years-old category, just 15 seconds separated Jo and Anna as they finished first and second respectively, earning Heathside a commanding team victory in both competitions.
Club mate Vanessa Parry continued the clubs’ dominant display as she returned from injury to win bronze in the Middlesex category.
Heathside picked up a second team trophy in the 45 to 49-years-old division as Jackie Wastell, Ruth Miller and Fiona Holland crossed the finishing line in fourth, sixth and ninth place respectively to clinch silver in the Southern Championships.
In the men’s event, Paul Lemmon was the highest placed Heathsider as he won bronze in the individual Middlesex Championships.
Heathsides’ young runners were also out in force at the weekend as they took part in the North West London Young Athletes Cross-Country League at Copthall.
Anna Clarke-Janssen gained the highest placed finish as she picked up fourth place in the girls’ under-17s race. There were also impressive runs from Ryan Wenzel, Cleo Chevalier and Lottie Sorbie.
JUNIOR Highgate Harrier Samara Williams was jumping for joy on Saturday after clinching an impressive victory in the North West Long League Championships.
Competing in the girls’ under-13s race, Williams showed great confidence to take top spot, adding to her sixth place finish in the London Championships on Wednesday.
Club mates Amy-Jane Cotter and Mei Corbett also ran well as they continued Highgate’s heroics, finishing in eighth and 10th place respectively.
In the under-11s boys’ category Stanley Harrison just missed out on victory.
He took the runners up spot in the over 2000m race. Daniel Lavin came home in fifth as the Highgate team ended the day in second place overall.
Alexandra Eastman was the highest placed Harrier in the girls’ under-11s race as she finished fourth, just 12 seconds ahead of teammate Ayala Jaggs who took sixth spot.
In the under-15s girls’ heats, prolific racer Alice Keane crossed the finishing line in fourth place as she competed against a strong field of 18 runners. Talia Caspi ran in 12th, earning Highgate fourth position overall.
In the under-17s age group, Heather Ashman put in a spirited display to finish eighth for the Highgate girls’ team, a placing mirrored by David Mobbs in the boys’ race.
