Landlord
is failing tenants
If Community Housing Group (CHG) chief executive Mick
Sweeney was really concerned about the legal costs of this action,
he would have taken the opportunity to meet with Councillor
Raj Chada, Camden Councils Chair of Housing at the time,
now its Leader (A waste of tenants money, February 2).
Councillor Chada had offered to act as a mediator between CHG
and Shortlife Community Housing (SCH), with a view to halting
any further legal costs. Regrettably, Mr Sweeney failed to attend
the meeting with no apologies given. This is indicative of CHGs
style of management.
I believe there is a huge amount of dissatisfaction amongst
CHG tenants. The organisation fails to carry out essential repairs
to many of its properties and estates within a reasonable period
of time. Routine maintenance and repairs on the estate where
I live have frequently been left unattended for years.
A group of CHG shareholders and tenants have been trying for
many years to bring about a more open and democratic style of
management with elected tenant representatives on the committee
of CHG. It was only a year or so ago that a group of CHG shareholders,
one of whom was the then Mayor of Camden, Councillor Harriet
Garland, tabled a motion calling for the resignation of the
Chief Executive and Management Committee of CHG. This was prompted
by CHGs arbitrary dismissal of the tenants forum,
which served as the voice of tenants, from their board of management.
Perhaps if CHG were more open and transparent in their dealings
with tenants and tenant groups, the dispute between CHG and
SCH could have been resolved without recourse to legal action.
An independent website for CHG tenants is now operating www.chgtenants.com.
