More than just books
• DESMOND Donovan and Alan Templeton are quite right to rubbish the idiotic conclusion of Tim Coates that the cost of lending each Camden library book is £10 (A very silly statistic, February 8).
This man has consistently campaigned against the value of libraries for too long and it is time that he was exposed for the ignoramus he appears to be.
Of my 43 years as a librarian, little more than three of them were spent in the process of lending books.
My remit was the provision of information from material not available for home reading.
Would Tim Coates regard mine as a wasted life? And are such institutions as the British and Guildhall Libraries of no account in his scheme of things?
