Help us protect the disabled
• AS you are no doubt aware, Camden Council has been consulting on the impact of the proposed changes to charges for community social care services recently.
Disability in Camden (DISC) believes that this is a tax on disability. They claim they need to raise £500,000 to provide improved service and feel that this should be squeezed out of some of the most vulnerable and economically deprived members of our community – disabled people.
The new administration decided there would be no council tax increases but neglected to tell us that they would be charging disabled people to cover the shortfall.
Did you realise that a one per cent increase in council tax would have meant an additional increase of £12 per annum per dwelling in Camden and this would have generated £1.16 million?
In contrast the charges being proposed would result in an average of £223 per annum disability tax for disabled residents, and for the luxury of being disabled!
DISC is proposing a deputation to the executive meeting on February 21 and we would like to meet with all our member groups to agree a common statement.
Please join us at this crucial moment to stop these attacks on the living standards and well-being of disabled people in the borough on Tuesday February 13 at 2pm, The Peckwater Centre, 6 Peckwater Street, NW5.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Please contact 020 7530 6482 or email info@discnwl.org.uk to confirm attendance.
