Campaign to save free travel for kids
PLANS to abolish free bus travel for under-16s – which opponents have branded “mobile youth clubs” – are being fought by Hampstead and Highgate MP Glenda Jackson and her Holborn and St Pancras colleague Frank Dobson.
Around 385,000 under-18s in full-time education will benefit from free bus and tram travel.
Since September 2005 under-16s have not been charged for riding the buses.
But Tory members on the London Assembly are campaigning to have the scheme scrapped.
The group, led by Westminster’s Angie Bray, instead wants buses specifically for school runs in just six London boroughs. |
