Delays fears over C-charge extension
THE introduction on Monday of the congestion charge extension will see Camden residents facing more hold-ups in the existing zone.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said on Tuesday that the zone expansion to much of Kensington and Chelsea would see traffic levels fall overall but rise by four to five per cent in the existing charge area.
He added that in 2008 owners of 4x4 vehicles in the current zone, which includes Euston, Bloomsbury, Holborn and St Pancras, are to lose their 90 per cent residents’ discount at a time when the charge will rise to £25 per day for higher-emission vehicles.
At a City Hall briefing, Mr Livingstone defended the congestion charge. “You have to work out where we would be if we hadn’t introduced the charge,” he said. The eight per cent traffic reduction in the existing charge zone was “the difference between central London moving, and gridlock”, he added. |
