Highgate Harriers fifth championship in a row

HIGHGATE Harriers women’s team sealed their fifth successive championship on Saturday after running to victory in the Metropolitan League at Perivale.
Despite having a weakened team and finishing third on the day, Highgate proved too strong for their rivals over the season as they continued to dominate the league.
North of Thames Champion Astrid Wingler led the Harriers home in third place overall.
In a competitive field, Fiona Burnie, Louise Burnie, Natalie Vasey, Natasha Cendrowicz, Fiona Maguire and Aneira Roose-McClew were also all in action for Highgate.
Meanwhile the Highgate men’s team finished in fourth place overall, with Glen Saqui hitting home as the highest-placed Harrier in 13th spot out of 219 finishers.
Elsewhere Highgate’s Simeon Williamson all but booked his place in the Great Britain team ahead of the European Indoor Championships after an impressive display in Sheffield on Sunday.
Competing for the Harriers in the Southern League and the Jubilee Cup, Williamson showed lightening speed as he won his 60m heat before going on to finish a close second in the semi-finals with a personal best time of 6.65.
The talented sprinter went on to record another record time in the final as he clinched a stunning silver medal.
Meanwhile in Spain, Highgate’s Damian Shirley finished 138th out of a field of several thousand in the Seville Marathon, finishing in just under three hours.
RUNNERS from London Heathside were also out in force on Saturday for the final Metropolitan League meet.
Jo King recorded her best league result of the season as she led the Heathside women’s team home with a commanding second place finish.
Club mate Vanessa Parry also ran well as she just missed out on a top 10 finish, as she took 11th place.
Despite missing out on the overall title, Heathside were crowned champions in the Veteran’s League as they finished ahead of running club Garden City.
The Heathside men’s vet team continued on the glory trail as they finished second in their league to take a deserved silver medal.
