Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 22 February 2007

Leave statue alone

• I ALSO thought that the statue of Jesus Christ on the cross outside St Mary’s Church was gruesome, especially after it had been painted with that realistic colour (Take statue down, Feb 15).
However, as a Buddhist/Shintoist whose husband and children are Christian, I now understand that that statue is there to remind Christians of how and why Jesus Christ died.
The nearby schools mentioned are indeed Church schools, therefore it should not be a problem for the pupils there, as they are learning about Jesus Christ.
Father Rob has been an extraordinary vicar. I wish him and his family all the best in Hackney.

• THE letter from A Burleigh (Take statue down, Feb 15) needs a comment.

This calvary on the north side of St Mary’s Somers Town is a reminder of our Christian heritage and that we should not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified – this image was there long before Father Wickham’s time and it is not his to remove – it is part of St Mary’s which belongs to parishioners, it is not the vicar’s private chapel.
On the continent there are many roadside shrines with a crucifix for the same reason as the one in Somers Town – the image is realistic because the event was real.
