How 'Portavilion' could look on Hampstead Heath, if it gets the go-ahead |
Pavilion idea is tabled by sculptor
IS it a box? Is it a plane? No, it’s the proposed new artwork for Hampstead Heath next summer.
Following the success of Italian artist Giancarlo Neri’s giant table and chair in Parliament Hill Fields two years ago, Heath chiefs yesterday (Wednesday) released this exclusive picture of what the new sculpture could look like.
The seven-metre by four-metre by four-metre structure, called Portavilion, to be sited just above the bandstand and café in Parliament Hill, is based on an idea by a not-for-profit art group called UP Projects to build a series of structures around the concept of “portable pavilions” in popular public spaces.
So far, Regent’s Park, Holland Park and Potters Field Park have already agreed to participate.
Polish sculptor Monika Sosnowska has been selected to develop the proposal for the Heath, which is due to be discussed by the consultative committee next month.
If the project gets the go-ahead, the new sculpture, made of impregnated wood, would be installed in May or June 2008 and removed in October 2008.
