Mail delivery office man arrested in thefts probe

Police raid on flat after ‘major operation’ tip-off from colleague

DETECTIVES are investigating allegations of a major post-stealing operation inside a Kentish Town delivery office, the New Journal has learned.
Police are not ruling out an “inside job” after arresting a 30-year-old man who works for Royal Mail last week.
They are understood to have raided the man’s flat shortly after his arrest and found scores of high-value goods, suspicious parcels and bubble-wrap wrappers.
One source said: “They could hardly get through the door because there was so much stuff.”
Packages involved are thought to include expensive watches that were being sent to and from a repair shop.
Others could include goods exchanged through the popular internet website eBay and important bank correspondence.
The scam was allegedly unravelled at the delivery office in Regis Road.
The New Journal understands that the arrest followed a tip-off from a post worker late last year which led to a covert investigation aimed at catching a suspect in the act. Royal Mail said yesterday (Wednesday) it had a “zero tolerance” approach to theft and that a police investigation was ongoing.
A police spokesman confirmed that a man had been arrested and released on bail.
He must appear before officers again later this month when investigators will decide whether or not charges can be brought.
Royal Mail last night (Wednesday) refused to say whether the man who was arrested – who is thought to live in Islington – had been suspended. Colleagues said there had been a suspicion that post had been going missing at the office.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail can confirm that a member of staff at its Kentish Town delivery office was arrested in connection with allegations of theft.
“A police investigation is now underway. Royal mail has a zero-tolerance policy against any instances of theft or delayed mail.”
