Ondine de Senneville in the garden |
‘Hands off our garden’ warning
PLANS to convert an award-winning garden into a car park have upset elderly tenants in Hampstead.
The garden in the courtyard of Monro House, a sheltered housing block at the corner of Fitzjohn’s Avenue and Perrin’s Lane, won a Camden Council award two years ago.
Council housing chiefs now want to “reclaim” the garden – originally a car park for the block – to provide more parking spaces. The garden has been lovingly cared for by a couple of long-term residents over the years. Tenants say it provides a vital outdoor space for tenants and visitors. None of the flats has balconies.
Tenants’ representative Ondine de Senneville said: “It has been used as a garden for as long as most of us can remember and we want it to stay that way. The additional noise and pollution from the car park will have a big impact on all of us. “The tenants who set up the garden originally have been ignored.”
Another tenant, who did not wish to be named, added: “We have put a lot of work into it over the years.”
A council press official said the extra parking spaces would be used by residents, their families and friends, doctors and care staff, as well as residents from two nearby sheltered homes, Wells and Henderson.”
She added: “There is a designated garden area around the block and the proposal is to relocate the garden to this area.”
