Church becomes centre for Ethiopian community for one day
HUNDREDS of Ethiopians flocked to Belsize Park on Saturday to celebrate the first Coptic Orthodox Mass at St Peter’s Church.
Local dignitaries and well-wishers packed into the building for the inauguration of a weekly Coptic Christian mass, followed by a celebratory meal.
Organiser Alem Sedeg sought the permission of the Archdeacon of Hampstead to arrange for the C of E church in Belsize Square to allow the weekly mass, which is expected to attract Ethiopians from across London when it occupies a weekly slot on Sundays between 7am and 10am. By tradition, Ethiopian masses begin before worshippers have eaten.
Archbishop Abune Entos, delegate for the Coptic church in Western Europe, led the traditional three hour service, the only one of its kind to have the blessing of the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church Synod.
