Not racist to laugh at religion
I am at a loss to understand the statement in a letter
you printed last week that the publication of anti-Islamic
cartoons is racist (Somers Town stands united with Muslims,
February 23).
As an atheist I despise all religious belief systems. My
belief is that choosing to organise your life according to what
I see as primitive superstitions is laughable and ridiculous,
and hence I think it appropriate to laugh at it and ridicule
it. What is racist about that?
Besides being an atheist, I am a pacifist. Hence, like the signatories
of the letter, I opposed the invasion of Iraq.
There is no logical comparison to be made between opposing anothers
chosen beliefs, which is something everyone does, and discriminating
against people because of their skin colour, which is very rightly
to be condemned.
