Keep up
pressure to save post office
I am appalled and frustrated by the news of the closure
of the post office in Belsize Village scheduled for March 13.
When the scrutiny panel on post office closures held a well-attended
public meeting, Post Office Ltd assured us that there would
continue to be a post office in Belsize Park and that the Belsize
Village office would remain open until a new site was found,
preferably on Haverstock Hill.
Councillor Blackwell and I have been in correspondence with
Post Office Ltd twice recently on this matter and have not yet
received any satisfactory response.
We will continue to pursue this matter to ensure the Post Office
meet their commitment.
The Belsize Residents Association have done an excellent
job in raising public awareness of this matter. The Post Office
does not seem to recognise that, as our scrutiny panel set out
so clearly, such post office closures have a significant
negative impact on the day-to-day lives of the most vulnerable
and socially excluded members of our community, including the
elderly, disabled and those with young children.
I have been told by many people that the Post Office in Finchley
Road is very heavily used and that there are extremely long
waits for customers. This situation will clearly get even worse
when the Belsize Village premises close.
I am committed to continue our pressure on the Post Office to
fulfil its promise and am confident that the council, with residents
support will get the service everyone wants and needs.
