Pupils decide to tackle bullying
HOMOPHOBIC bullying may soon be a thing of the past in one Somers Town school, after concerned pupils launched a campaign to stop it.
Students from Years 9 and 11 at South Camden Community School (SCCS) in Charrington Street agreed to dedicate their own time after school, in lunchbreaks and even weekends to look at ways they could challenge the problem.
When the School Council was reshuffled last September, children were asked what issues should be tackled and many listed homophobic abuse as a prime concern. Lily Jannat, one of the school councillors involved in the campaign, said: “Calling people homophobic names has affected people that are gay or straight. We must make people aware that this can’t be tolerated.”
Drama coach Tony Dallas, who uses role-play to get people talking about difficult subject said: “It’s all about communication. If you can’t communicate where are you? A lot of the times kids just say these words without thinking about what they’re saying. They don’t realise the effect those words can have.”
