Jury hears of mob attack
THE prosecution case against eight suspects accused of murdering a local teenager in a gang attack watched by hundreds, ended on Tuesday at the Old Bailey.
But the jury investigating the killing of Mahir Osman, were told that there was no scientific link between any of the young men in the dock and the weapons recovered in the area. Fingerprints, DNA and fibres had been checked by forensic experts.
Yesterday (Wednesday) trial judge Stephen Kramer, was hearing legal submissions from defence barristers for the defendants. Eighteen-year-old mechanical engineering student Mahir was singled out and trapped on January 28 last year by a mob near the junction of Camden High Street and Parkway.
Mahir who lived with his family in Gilbey’s yard, Chalk Farm, was overwhelmed and lying dying within a minute. He suffered 30 separate areas of injury. There were three fatal stab wounds in the back, the prosecutor told the court.
She was assisted by colleague Det Cons Pam Curnow who spent many hours studying CCTV footage from more than 20 cameras in order to try and identify participants.
The jury heard that many of those involved had escaped.
Those in the dock admitted being present in the locality but denied taking part in the killing.
The case resumes today (Thursday).
