Politicians under fire as their pay bill tops £1m
BY voting to raise their own allowances on the same night they agreed a budget that will slash 350 Town Hall jobs, councillors have fuelled “anger and discontent in the workforce”, union leaders said this week.
The wage bill for Camden’s politicians will top £1 million next year after councillors voted themselves a pay rise in line with council workers’ wage increases.
George Binette, Town Hall convenor for union Unison, which has 3,000 members among council staff, said: “Given the scale of job losses, for councillors to vote themselves an increase in allowances does seem inconsiderate, to say the least.”
Rises in allowances of up to 2.5 per cent were approved despite objections from opposition Labour councillors, who were challenged to forego their own increases if they felt so strongly.
A councillor’s basic allowance will be £9,304.95 a year, up from £9,078, while the council leader will earn an extra £27,675, up from £27,000 and the leader of the opposition £15,375, up from £15,000.
