Jayne’s killer Cup strike

Premier League
Cup Final
Arsenal 1, Leeds 0

A LAST-gasp winner from Jayne Ludlow saw Arsenal lift their ninth League Cup in 15 years on Sunday.

A close fought game at Scunthorpe United’s ground remained scoreless as the fourth official held up the board indicating two minutes stoppage time.
But with extra-time looming, Ludlow volleyed home from close range to bring the first silverware of the season back to north London.
Arsenal went in to the final full of confidence having beaten Leeds 5-0 in the FA Cup final last May.
But buoyed by a record crowd of 3,866 fans, a defence minded Leeds side continued to frustrate the Gunners. Leeds could have gone ahead on the half hour mark through Sue Smith’s well hit free-kick. But it was Ludlow’s effort in stoppage time that settled matters. Gunners manager Vic Akers said: “I’m delighted to win and we still have to play them twice in the league yet so that could be interesting.” With one cup already in the bag, the Gunners will now set their sights on the FA Cup as they prepare for a testing encounter away against Bristol Academy next Sunday.
