Probe into elderly home
CAMDEN’S housing chief pledged on Monday to investigate why the council wanted to house young vulnerable people in an estate for the elderly.
Councillor Chris Naylor said he would look into why Camden planned to house vulnerable 18-25 year-olds at Oldfield estate in Primrose Hill.
He said: “I was asked if I could check why other tenants weren’t being found from Camden’s 15,000 waiting list.”
His comments come after Councillor Martin Davies told residents in February that he didn’t want to see needy young people moved into an elderly block. Cllr Naylor backed up his colleague’s statement at a meeting with more than 100 Oldfield residents on Monday. More than 100 of the 200 people living there have signed a petition.
Cllr Naylor also promised to look into why elderly people did not appear to want the flats – which overlook Primrose Hill. Sally de Sousa, a member of Oldfield Estates’ Tenants Association, said: “I think the officers are trying to dump 18-25s on to our housing association. They have a lot of them on their lists and they know there are empty flats here.”
