Pub troubles for a lady

ONE of Hampstead’s titled residents has told how she has to dodge drinkers in her street and finds pub glasses in her garden.
Lady Listowel – the widow of the 5th Earl of Listowel and former Lords committee chairman William Hare – has written to the council objecting to a proposed late licence for the Freemason’s Arms in Downshire Hill.
She is in Australia but asked her aide Brigitte Mierau to file a protest in her name.
The letter said Lady Listowel had been troubled by regulars at the pub in the summer and on one occasion had her garage blocked by a parked car.
It added: “Lady Listowel (who is over 70) had to walk that considerable distance, passing through the revellers outside the Freemasons Arms who were congregating on the pavement in order to get to her home. Parking in general is a nightmare around here at the best of times but unbearable during the summer months.”
Her objection is among a raft of protests against the Freemasons’ plans to serve alcohol until midnight.
Ms Mierau said: “Glasses get left out on the pavement or left on people’s garden walls. Lady Listowel has found several glasses in her garden. People have urinated in her drive.”
The Heath and Hampstead Society have also filed an objection.
The pub said managers would “liaise with local neighbours”.
A statement sent to the council said: “Reasonable steps are taken to recognise the rights of local residents and to encourage customers to leave the premises quietly.”
Licensing chiefs are due to make a decision on Tuesday night.
