Couple’s departure ends 60-year family link with parade of shops
CUSTOMERS bid farewell this week to a husband-and-wife team who have run a popular hardware store in Highgate for more than 40 years.
Geoffrey and Elaine Lever, of Cavour’s in Swain’s Lane, pack up their familiar pavement display and close their doors for the last time on Saturday.
Friends and neighbours are to make farewell presentations this afternoon (Thursday).
The couple’s departure ends a 60-year family link with the street – Geoffrey’s father, Harry, opened a food shop in the parade soon after the end of World War II.
Residents and traders’ associations are pressing the parade’s owner, the Earl of Listowel, to find a similar independent hardware store to replace Cavour’s.
Mr Lever said: “The main change we have seen has been the closure of the bank and the post office. There used to be a bookmakers, which would bring us a lot of business. I am not being disrespectful to the cafés here, because they are well run, but they do not bring the same type of trade businesses like mine need to thrive.”
Chartered surveyor Charles Osbourne, who represents the Earl of Listowel, said he would listen to all suitable offers for the shop. |
