High-flying Harriers stay on winning trail
HIGHGATE Harriers continued their winning streak on Sunday when they raced to glory in the Finchley 20-mile Road Race.
Out of a field of more than 600 runners, Daniel Higgins, Andrew Aitken and Kevin Linehan all scored valuable points for the Harriers to seal a commanding team victory.
Highgate also picked up a series of impressive wins in the North West London Cross-Country League on Saturday in their final league meet of the winter at Wormwood Scrubs.
The high-flying Harriers were well placed in six of the eight categories as the club’s top two scorers Alice Keane and William Laing continued to impress in their relevant age categories.
In the under-11s age group, Stanley Harrison was in outstanding form as he won the 1500m with a time of eight minutes, three seconds.
Club mate Daniel Lavin also ran well as he just missed out on the medals in fourth place.
William Laing was fourth in the boys’ under-15s 4400m in 15mins, 23secs, while his brother George finished 15th in 17mins, 30secs.
Samara Williams added another gold for Highgate when she won the girls’ under-13s 2200m race in seven minutes, 58secs. Alice Keane clinched the final medal of the day when she won bronze in the girls’ under-15s race
• RUNNERS from London Heathside were in action over all three major disciplines at the weekend as they took part in track and field, cross-country and a 20-mile road race.
A top team of junior Heathsiders got things off and running when they turned out for their final fixture in the North West London Young Athletes Cross-Country League.
The star of the show was Eunika Burkot who finished second in the under-15s girls’ event as she completed the 3000m course in a time of 11minutes, 54seconds.
There were also good runs for Kirsten and Lottie Sorbie who both finished ninth in their respective under-11s and under-13s events.
In the boys’ competition, Brook Abrha put in a determined performance to finish fifth in the under-11s 2200m race with a time of eight minutes, 43secs, finishing 23 seconds ahead of club mate Gabriel Springer who took 10th spot.
Meanwhile on Sunday Sarah Swan was in outstanding form as she helped the Heathside women’s team clinch third place in the Finchley 20-mile road race in Hillingdon.
In the men’s division, Ken Heney was the first Heathsider home as he crossed the finishing line in 24th place with a time of two hours, 10mins and 20secs.
Heathside also enjoyed a good turnout for the Middlesex Indoor Track and Field Championships. Jacob Howe was among the top performers as he clinched gold in the senior 800m, while under-15s star Lucy McNally won bronze in her 60m-sprint. |
