Emergency? You’re through to a call centre
• CAMDEN Council’s praiseworthy gesture in freezing council tax proves what many of us thought: that we had been grossly overcharged because of Labour’s anxiety to stay in office. It was leaking unwarranted amounts of money to keep the support of needless quangos and non-contributors.
It is a pity things have been spoilt by councillors insensitively awarding themselves a rise in pay. Being a Camden councillor is a “nice little earner”, given the lowest rank-and-file payment is £9,037 plus expenses.
I’m trying hard to understand Councillor Martin Davies’ logic when he states that farming out emergency calls to a call-centre is going to save money and improve the Careline service, the charge for which has just gone up from £52 for the gold service to £58.50.
Presumably, in future, when we press our pendants we’ll hear something like “Camden call centre. Can I help you? Please hold while I try to connect you to the next available advisor.”
Very comforting and reassuring.

• NORMALLY, an incoming administration blames its predecessors for performance shortcomings in its first years. Not the Lib Dems and their Tory cohorts. The new council tax booklet states that the independent public sector watchdog praised Camden Council for its continued improvement in services, making it one of the top 10 performing councils in the country.
Would it not have been more honest to have added that the Lib Dems, in their short period of office, can claim no credit for this?
Your Camden also has a half-page advertisement proudly proclaiming that “doorstep recycling collections will continue as normal” over Easter. Somewhat ironic in view of the fact that doorstep recycling is to be discontinued during the very week before.
