Camden New Journal - by PAUL KEILTHY

Owner’s concern for dog walkers

DOG owners will be forced to walk their pets on narrow patches of unhygienic land under proposed control laws, a Camden Town activist has warned.
Under the dog control orders being considered by Camden Council, owners caught walking their pets off leads outside designated ‘dog exercise areas’ – among a list of new dog-related offences – could be fined £80 on the spot or taken to court and ordered to pay up to £1,000.
Victoria Hawkes, who walks her two Pomeranians from her College Place home, has gathered 250 names on a petition in just a few days from fellow dog-owners who use the gardens and squares in Camden Town and Somers Town to exercise their pets.
She said: “Because a few irresponsible dog-owners can’t be trusted, I’m being punished.”
In a letter to the New Journal, council leader Keith Moffit said there had been ‘massive interest’ in the proposed orders, but complained that ‘many are confused about available options’.
But Ms Hawkes said: “It is all very well for Cllr Moffitt to say that dogs will be allowed off their leads in the Royal Parks, Hampstead Heath and Camden Park dog exercise areas. But some of those areas are just narrow dog toilets.”
A questionnaire has been launched allowing residents to choose between different versions of the dog control orders.
Six-hundred-and-fifty people responded to the consultation in the opening four weeks.
