Mahir murder trial nears end
THE Old Bailey trial of eight young men accused of the murder of student Mahir Osman 14 months ago is due to end today (Thursday).
Verdicts are expected after a six-week investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 18-year-old’s tragic death at the hands of a mob.
The teenager, who lived with his family in Gilbey’s Yard, Chalk Farm, was caught up in a long-running feud between rival groups of his fellow Somalis.
His blood-soaked jeans and puffa jacket, still spilling out feather from gashes made by knives, were exhibited in court by Scotland Yard Detective Sergeant Julie Parr.
She confirmed that the run-up to the killing involved a “lot of incidents between Somalis”.
Mahir died on a busy Saturday night – January 28 last year – in Camden High Street, opposite the Tube station.
Bystanders watched in disbelief as he was cut down by 30 attackers armed with knives, said prosecutor Brendan Finucane, QC. The jury heard that many of those involved had escaped, some fleeing abroad.
Those in the dock admit being in the area but deny charges of murder, manslaughter or violent disorder.
Four have anonymity for legal reasons. Ismail Mohammed, 20, Liban Elmi, 20, Mohammed Mohamud, 18, and Abidrahman Mohamed can be named. |
