Bear cheek

• E H Shepard’s illustrations of Winnie-the-Pooh (Pooh could be a bit of a cross to bear, March 16) are said never to have been acknowledged by A A Milne until one occasion which may have done much to make amends.
Milne, asked what he would like on his tomb stone, replied: “Shepard’s drawing of Pooh and Piglet and then, thinking it to be mine, St Peter would open the gates wide and usher me in.”
