Sporting triumph as 5,000 turn out for centre's grand opening

THE grand opening of the new Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre saw 5,000 people turn out to take a peek at the new building on Saturday.
The centre, part of an £85 million flat, leisure and park redevelopment in Avenue Road includes two new swimming pools, squash courts, gyms and sports hall. Around 2,000 people have already signed up to join the centre after taking tours and watching sports displays by footballers and gymnasts at the weekend.
Opening the centre on Saturday, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Councillor Phil Turner said it had been a controversial project. But he added: “With its completion, Camden Council’s vision of regenerating Swiss Cottage with high-quality community, cultural and leisure facilities, has been realised.”
The centre also includes 42 affordable and 131 private flats, community centre, doctor’s surgery and market area.
