Gambling with our peace
• THE excellent report of the plan to turn part of a hotel in Bloomsbury into a casino quotes from the hotel company’s arguments which helped to sway the Camden planning committee (Outrage at casino plans green light, March 22).
They say the hotel “would not allow a casino to disturb its own hotel guests – let alone nearby residents”. Keeping things peaceful for guests inside has no bearing on the disturbance that hundreds of households round the hotel would experience with all the extra comings and goings throughout the night.
They have installed machinery at the back of their hotel, to make life pleasanter for visitors, even though it has made some of the bedrooms in adjacent flats unusable. The peace of people living in council flats doesn’t count for much compared to the profit to be made from the sort of people who would visit a four-star casino.
